Although the gold rush came about in 1848, Lincoln was largely left “unnoticed” for many years until about 1859 when settlement began to happen. At first, Theodore D. By the late 1800s, many civil war veterans had moved into the area and began to plant orchards, raise cattle, and create many businesses based on this agricultural wave. Discoveries such as coal and clay also contributed significantly to Lincoln’s growth. These mines provided much need coal for the furnaces in the surrounding region, and the clay fueled a pottery business that has lasted more than a century. Today, Lincoln has much to offer its residents and visitors.
