About Placerville
Like much of the many cities and census-designated places in the Greater Sacramento area, Placerville has had its beginnings around the time of the gold rush area. Back in those days, Placerville’s name was Old Dry Diggins, a name in reference to the miners that brought out soil to the river in order to separate gold from the soil.
Placerville has also had a bit of notoriety due to its vigilante justice many years after the beginning of Old Dry Diggins. Now, there were only three recorded hangings that have been marked in the museum’s history, and these hangings were a result of three men coming on horseback with their guns firing… The rest became history.
It wasn’t until 1854 when the city became incorporated, that the name changes to Placerville took place. The initiative to change city names happened in 1850 by many of the locals. At the time of Placerville’s incorporation, it was California’s 3rd largest city.
Many changes have occurred to Placerville since then and are now the home to over 10,000 residents. Placerville has a historical designation and is no stranger to tourism. Placerville has many historical sites that many tourists come to see, such as the Pony Express, Hangman’s Tree, The Bell Tower, Druid Monument, the Site of Old Dry Diggins Mining Camp, the Shakespeare Club, and so much more.
Many locals love to stop by Main Street for its shops, events, businesses, restaurants, and retail stores. To add on to this, there are many festivals that celebrate the history of the city and brings the community together. Events like Girls Night Out, Festival of Lifts, and the Bell Tower Brewfest are a few of the many events locals enjoy.
